Staff Qualificatioins and Training

Within the nursery we offer training for unqualified staff to achieve their childcare qualifications e.g. NVQ level 2, 3 & 4 whilst working within the nursery. Both the manager and deputy manager have assessing experience and are qualified assessors to support the staff within their training.
All the qualified staff at Little Oaks Nursery have completed either their NVQ level 3, BTEC national diploma or the diploma in childcare and education we currently have a 95% qualified team to a level 3 or above (March 2010). All our unqualified staff are working towards a child care qualification with support from their colleagues. Staff have regular supervisorys and appraisals with the manager and deputy manager to discuss their personal development and to look at their role within the team. All staff have CRB police checks (and ISA from end 2010) and are inducted into the nursery by a qualified member of staff. This induction includes health and safety, equalities, fire and safe guarding children awareness.

Within the nursery we promote positive behaviour from parents, staff and the children. All staff read, sign and adhere to a code of conduct. Within the rooms staff use makaton, visual time tables, discussions and a gold book to promote positive behaviour with the children. Children are never called naughty, put on a naughty chair/ step and physical punishment is never used. Staff discuss problems or un wanted behaviour with the children looking at how they and others feel, they are then encouraged to say sorry and to participate within another activity. This is then discussed daily with the children parents.
Staff carry out well being and involvment observations on children every two months and have monthly team meetings to support this and implement action plans, we believe children and staff cannot progress and develop when levels of well being are low. We do all we can to achieve high levels of well being for all.
